    Pretty Wings

In October I made my annual visit to Florida to visit my friend Silvia and her daughters Izzy and Bela.  As with every time I get to hang out with them, I am reminded anew how lucky I am to have such a wide net of amazing friends with amazing children.  They are 7 and 5 now, and Izzy loves to play with animals and bugs, and Bela loves to take pictures.  Ergo, we couldn’t possibly have any more fun than we do.  We spent a lot of time tromping around various nature preserves and playing with their two pet lizards.  It was the weekend before Halloween, so the girls spent a good deal of time in their Halloween costumes–Izzy as a “goddess fairy” and Bela as a “busy bee.”  When I woke up on Sunday morning, they were already in costume for their Girl Scouts Halloween bowling event later that afternoon, so for the first time ever I got to watch a fairy make herself toast.  It was as adorable as you might imagine.

I already can’t wait to go back.  Before I do, I’m going to post about our many outdoor adventures on ::crickets::, because these two demand new content, and new content they shall have.  I love them.  Here are some photos I took around the house, culminating in a legitimate grass fight that left us all giggling and filthy just before I had to leave for the airport.  (As a courtesy to my fellow travelers, I managed a quick shower!)

Just as a postscript, I would like to add: those are some chill lizards.  They don’t bat a lizard eyelash at anything.

Sibling Revelry | Youngstown Kids Photography

Sibling Revelry…was that the name of a short-lived comic strip in the 90s? (Google says: YES. And this page collects a couple of the actual strips, revealing that I actually remember the “Stew steals a candy bar that turns out to be a free sample” storyline. This in turn jogs my memory to the fact that I used to cut out comic strips and put them in a binder. Wait a second…do I secretly write a comic strip blog? It wouldn’t really surprise me.)

Anyway, before I went all 90s tangent-y there, I was going to intro the latest round of adventures with my dear friend Joanna’s kids Julia and Jude. I went up to Pittsburgh for a weekend in September, and one of my first stops was over in Youngstown to hang out with the Js. We went to a local park and garden, where we admired the flowers and stormed the steps of the “castle” (actually a small chapel). Then we rewarded ourselves with some Cold Stone. Jude discovered that when he put some ice cream into a bottle of Sprite, volcanic hilarity ensued, and I discovered that volcanic ice cream makes me laugh as though I myself were three years old. As always, I had a glorious time with these folks. They are some of the dearest people in the world to me.

Please enjoy these photos, especially the series in which Jules decides to give Jude a kiss on the cheek and turns it into a TKO. In the final shot, Joanna is yelling, “Jules! You can stop! He’s in full submit!” Note also Jude’s dramatic transformations into The Hulk. He’s a big fan of the Bill Bixby series, and he has an entire sequence that he follows to turn from Dr. Banner into The Hulk. He’ll even rescue a damsel if one presents herself!

Brittany and Michael | Memphis Engagement Photographer

After Brittany and Michael met, Michael quickly discovered Brittany’s love for Disney songs, especially from The Little Mermaid.  He indulged her and memorized all the words so they could sing them together.  So when it came time to propose, Michael harnessed the power of Sebastian…and all of Brittany’s friends.

At sunset one night on Mud Island, Brittany and Michael went for a paddle in one of the swan boats in the lagoon that faces the Memphis skyline.  Suddenly over the loudspeaker, “Kiss the Girl” started to play, and one by one Brittany’s friends popped out of their hiding places along the boat route to join in the chorus.  Then Michael proposed, and come on, ladies who grew up in the 80s and 90s…how are you not immediately saying yes to THAT?!

So a few weeks later, we headed back to Mud Island to shoot their engagement photos, and took a stroll down South Main afterwards.  I can’t wait to attend their August wedding and congratulate them again–they are a wonderful, loving couple and so sweet together.  Plus I’m sort of hoping someone bursts into a rendition of “Under the Sea” at the reception.  It’s only fitting, right?

The following shots mark the one and only time I have ever sprawled on the floor of the Mud Island monorail.

    Mr. & Mrs. Foley

It’s a very rare Saturday that finds me up at dawn, getting ready to photograph a wedding.  But you make exceptions when people are as special to you as the Jackson family is to me (Rebecca’s sister Jamie has been my dearest friend since we were assigned to sit together on the school bus in the sixth grade).  And what a beautiful exception this was.

On June 1, Rebecca Jackson and Brian Foley were married at Bellevue Baptist Church.  There must have been some special magic at work, because we spent the morning under the threat of severe thunderstorms even though the sky looked harmlessly overcast.  We finished up all Rebecca and Brian’s outdoor portraits (thanks to a chauffeuring assist from Brian’s dad) and then brought the wedding party out in front of the church for the big group shot.  All of a sudden, the wind started howling.  We had just enough time to fire off a few frames and run for cover before the sky absolutely opened, and torrents of rain came down right up until it was time for Rebecca and Brian to leave for their honeymoon.  Talk about good luck: they got rain on their wedding day, but none of it affected the festivities at all!

My sincerest congratulations to Brian and Rebecca.  Thanks for allowing me to share in your wonderful day!

At this point we knew the rain was a few seconds away, and the wind started whipping everything around.  My mom was fixing a dress, and I yelled at her, “I know this isn’t a normal assistant job, but right now you have to HOLD MY HAIR!”  Brian and Rebecca Foley - June 1, 2013

Must Love Dogs | Germantown Family Photos

There are just a few things you need to know about this very fun, very freezing session:

    1) Meghan and Ryan are an adorable couple, and they are expecting their first child, Olivia, in the springtime.  (Yay!)
    2) It has been 70 degrees in Memphis for about three solid months, and on this particular morning, it was 32.  Which was tragic, because Meghan REALLY wanted some bare-belly maternity photos.  (Kidding!  Totally kidding!)
    3) Their dogs, Oscar and Lola, are full of insane amounts of energy, but they’ll snap into a perfect pose in no time flat.
    4) I’m pretty sure I’m always going to make people run after each other for photos from now on, because it’s mildly embarrassing and thus always makes everyone crack up, and I kind of love the results.  So future couples beware!

Running shot’s other advantage: it gets the blood flowing and makes it seem more like 40 degrees instead of 32!Meghan and RyanMeghan and RyanMeghan and RyanCongratulations to this sweet couple (and the future canine big brother and sister)!
